Dan David, chairman of the British company Photo-Me International, has made millions of dollars setting up photo booths in shopping malls. That in itself is an amazing thing. To share his fortune, David has begun giving away three $1 million prizes. James Nachtwey is one of this year's winners. I don't know how I was nominated. It was a surprise to me.
I don't know that much about Louis Faurer, so I'm looking forward to the exhibition. The photographs on the website for Philadelphia Museum of Art show some images using from-the-hip street photos and date from mid-century.
The ASMP, American Society of Media Photographers, has published a white paper on the sate of rates paid to editorial photographers. As you may know, the news continues to get worse. However, the paper points out one advantage that photographers have over publishers: "Photographers provide the content that the publishers need. Although individual photographers cannot bargain collectively, if enough individual photographers refuse to work for inadequate pay, publishers will have no choice but to react to the forces of the free market system and increase their payments for photography."
Cartier-Bresson says, "My passion was never for photography per se". Geez, what if it was!
