Starting Own Photography Business
Anyone interested in starting their own photography business will soon learn that solid business skills are as important as photography skills. Most of the popular photography magazines do not delve into this enough.
One of the best resources for photography business skills is EP. EP is an essential resource for photographers looking to do editorial photography. It also has plenty of relevant information for corporate and advertising photography.

Hi. I am currently a photographer for PCA National. I LOVE what I do. A co-worker and I have been kicking around the idea of opening our own business. She has 30 years experience in this and has ran her own business before. I also have business experience and a Bachlors degree in Business. Where do we begin and what might be the best type of equiptment to use. We want to be digital and will be doing everything from family photography to animals to adult photography. I guess i would just like some insight on where to begin. We have LOTS of great ideas just need to put them in action.

Future Competition?
No! Future Colleague.
I think going digital is the right call. You can probably match a camera back or body to a system you already have. There are plenty of medium format digital backs for both Mamiya and Hasselblad. Nikon and Canon have fantastic digital bodies. The quality of these 35mm systems might be good enough to meet all your needs.
For printing I'd recommend the Epson 7600 (for up to 24" wide) or the Epson 9600 (up to 44" wide) ink jet printers. If you need faster printing speeds, you might consider a Fuji Pictrography printer. I use both the Fuji and the 9600 and am happy with both.
I also offer a service that provides online editing and proofing capabilities.
Your final decision about equipment and services should be based on the work you decide to do. figure that out first.
The whole industry is changing. It is quite an exciting time. There are probably oportunities opening up that no one has thought about yet.
Here's a list with a few more photographer associations.
Best of luck on your new adventure!
